This green tea shot recipe is a fun drink to serve whenever I invite people over for a get together. Bright in color and full of fruity sweetness, it goes down so smoothly! This Jameson whiskey based shooter is similar to a kamikaze and only requires 4 ingredients to make.
The first time I had a green tea shot it reminded me of a kamikaze because of its yellowish green color and fruity flavor. But while the kamikaze has a strong vodka taste, the green tea shot is much more mellow in the sense that it tastes more like a summer cocktail than a shot. The flavors are sweet, bright and peachy, with the spiced taste of whiskey that warms the back of the throat.
Despite its name, the green tea shot actually doesn’t contain any green tea! I was surprised to know that the first time I made it. I expected a milder, more tea-like taste, and was instead introduced to a very fruity cocktail. My recipe is very simple and easy to make. It contains the traditional Jameson Irish Whiskey, sour mix, Peach Schnapps, and some lemonade.
Table of contents
Ingredients
- Jameson Irish Whiskey: Jameson whiskey is the recommended brand because this cocktail was invented by the Jameson whiskey company. But if you are like me and aren’t too knowledgeable about whiskey, feel free to use another popular whiskey brand. The taste of whiskey is quite diluted so you won’t be able to tell the difference.
- Sour mix: Sour mix is a cocktail mix made of equal parts lemon and lime juice with some simple syrup that’s been mixed and shaken with ice cubes. You can buy it at the liquor store and in some grocery stores.
- Peach Schnapps: Also often used as a cocktail mix, Peach Schnapps is a grain spirit that’s both sweet and fruity. It’s syrupy and the flavors are quite concentrated.
- Lemonade or lemon-lime soda: I personally prefer using sugar-free or low sugar lemonade for this drink as I’m a big fan of sour drinks. If you prefer sweet, use sweetened lemonade or Sprite for a little fizz.
Homemade Sour Mix
For a quick homemade sour mix, place 3 tablespoons of sugar with 1/4 cup of water in a small saucepan and simmer until the sugar has dissolved. Transfer the syrup to a glass bowl and let it cool until it reaches room temperature. Add 1/4 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice (without pulp), 1/4 freshly squeezed lime juice (without pulp), and a pinch of salt to the syrup, and stir. Transfer the sour mix to a mason jar and refrigerate for up to 10 days.
Equipment Needed
- Cocktail shaker. A regular size cocktail shaker is all you need to make this simple cocktail.
- Shot glasses. The shot glasses are optional but a lot of fun to serve the drink in. These are the ones I am using in this post.
How To Make It

- Put the ingredients in the shaker. Add equal amounts of whiskey, peach schnapps and sour mix into a shaker.
- Fill it with ice. Fill the shaker with ice, put the lid on and give it a vigorous shake.
- Serve it. Pour the drink into shot glasses and add a splash of lemon-lime soda or lemonade. Enjoy!
Variations
- Use vodka. Use vodka instead of whiskey to make a white tea shot. With vodka, the flavors of the citrus really stands out!
- Make it non alcoholic. To make this a non-alcoholic green tea shot, simply replace the whiskey and peach schnapps with 0.5 ounce of fresh lime juice and 0.5 ounce coconut water.
- Make it a full size cocktail. Serve this tea green in a tall cocktail glass filled with ice. Make the shot in the cocktail shaker and pour 2 shots worth of liquid in the glass. Finish by topping with plenty of lemonade or lemon-lime soda.
Expert Tips
- Use lemonade ice cubes. Make lemonade ice cubes for a more flavorful shot. I like to keep a couple of trays of lemonade ice cubes in my freezers so I can add them to fruity drinks and even sparkling water. Instead of the drinks being diluted by regular ice cubes, they become more flavorful and refreshing.
- Chill the shot glasses. Keep the shot glasses chilled in the fridge. This is a trick I learned during my bartending years in Japan and I do the same for my wine glasses. By doing so the shots will be colder and even more refreshing.
What To Serve With
Most of the time, green tea shots make an appearance in my kitchen when I am hosting a dinner party. I think they are a fun drink to have pre or post dinner and go really well with smaller light dishes. Some of my favorites are:
- Strawberry, tomatillo and watermelon salad
- Inari sushi
- Spicy tuna rolls
- Korean cucumber salad
- Castella cake
- Tofu brownies

Frequently Asked Questions
No it will not get you drunk. A green tea shot only contains 1 ounce of alcohol, so you will get a nice little buzz that should last a little less than hour.
Yes. While Jameson whiskey is made from cereals, it undergoes a meticulous removal of allergenic proteins like gluten during the triple distillation process.
A white tea shot is usually made with vodka instead of whiskey, and lemon juice and simple syrup instead of sour mix.

- 0.5 ounce peach schnapps or other peach liqueur
- 0.5 ounce Sour mix

Notes
Make ahead: If you wish to make a big batch ahead of time, mix the whiskey, schnapps, and sour mix in a jar or pitcher and leave it in the fridge. When it’s time to serve the shooters, pour 1.5 ounce of the mix in a cocktail shaker – or double or triple the servings since you can make more than one shot at a time – add a few ice cubes and close with a lid. Shake for a few seconds and serve topped with a little lemonade or lemon-lime soda.
