An old fashioned drink with a modern twist you’ll love – this whiskey sour comes with freshly grated ginger and a fragrant rosemary sprig for a stir stick!

How to make a whiskey sour

Mixologists have been all the rage these past few years and I’m so glad they are back in style after taking a back seat for so long! There are so many yummy and creative cocktails listed on menus these days that it gets me as excited to try them as if I was shopping for macarons at Ladurée bakery!

Will I go for a curry lemongrass martini, a spicy mezcal mule, a menage a trois, or a cucumber and lavender collins? So many options, head spinning…

When I’m home I usually go for wine – white or sparkling – but sometimes I like to dabble into mixology and make myself a fun cocktail I can enjoy quietly from the comfort of my own couch. Last week it was a tart and slightly spicy rosemary whiskey sour – very  simple to make and yet, it felt like such a treat!

Making a whiskey sour is super easy: all you need is whiskey, fresh lemon juice, a little sugar, some ice cubes and a cocktail shaker.

For my version I’ve added freshly grated ginger and rosemary to bump up the taste level and make it more fancy looking. It also tasted healthier and more refreshing, which I always love.

The sprig of rosemary adds a little resinous note to the drink but is more of an olfactory experience than anything else (it looks really pretty too!)

Grated ginger is a personal favorite ingredient of mine. I think it goes well with so many drinks and I love the burning sensation that happens when it goes down my throat. It’s both soothing and cleansing. And in a whiskey sour, it’s a match made in heaven. Smoky, spicy, tart, punchy and really, really satisfying.

If like me, you cannot stand the taste of maraschino or luxardo cherries (the classic whiskey sour comes with one or two), this version should make you smile, clap your hands and say “one more please!”
