Bright Skin Smoothie Recipe

A little something to brighten up the skin this winter!

The heater is in full blast in our apartment and my skin feels tight and flaky because of it.

We sometimes briefly open the window to let in some fresh air and moisture, but not this week. Not when it’s 25ºF outside, snowing and so windy that it feels like our windows could break. When it gets like this, I need to care for my skin more than usual. I’ll steam in the shower, sleep with the humidifier on and eat lots and lots of fruits and veggies. It’s still not perfect but I do notice a difference, plus, my sinuses always feel so much better!

I started making these a couple of weeks ago after going days without sunshine – my skin was looking pretty dull. I was in dire need of something zingy and re-energizing so I made this quick little concoction. This is a very light and thin smoothie; it rather tastes like a cleansing juice than a thick shake. It’s easy to drink, tastes mildly sweet and reminds me of a flavored lemonade, almost.

  • Strawberries: Improve skin tone and complexion.
  • Apple: contains vitamin C which helps you make collagen – what causes the skin to look smooth and hydrated.
  • Banana: rich in potassium which helps hydrate and moisturize dehydrated skin.
  • Kiwi: contains several skin friendly nutrients like vitamin C, E and antioxidants whic are essential for rejuvenating your skin’s health.
  • Almond Milk: contains vitamin E and a variety of antioxidants essential to your skin’s health.
  • Ground Flaxseed: The essential fatty acids found in flaxseeds help keep your skin hydrated and smooth in appearance.

Questions and Reviews

  1. This is really fresh and yummy! I never would have thought of using actual apple since it’s so fibrous – normally smoothie shops just use apple juice. This just tasted so bright and less sweet than apple juice, and it was the perfect pick-me-up in the morning. I tried it because I have the opposite problem: living in a southern climate has started to wreak havoc on my pale skin in the form of splotchiness. Anything skin-brightening is on my radar now! I could drink this every day…!

    1. Hi Deana! The weather can be such a problem sometimes, I’m currently in Japan where it’s 100% humidity and my skin is taking a while to adjust to the wet climate! Have you tried skin softeners? They are amazing, I couldn’t live without them, I wrote a post about it: https://pickledplum.com/smooth-skin-softener-products/
You can also try teas such as chamomille and rooibos which help with splotchiness: https://pickledplum.com/5-best-teas-look-youthful-keep-weight-off/ I hope this helps!

  2. Hi Caroline.. Love the recipe.. Here in India, the climate is such that more than food, the body craves for cooler stuff, something that soothes the stomach and your recipe just serves the purpose. Do try the papaya smoothie – it tastes nice and is super healthy food for the body!

    1. Hi Jacque! You can try 1/2 cup yogurt with 1/2 cup water or any other type of non dairy substitute like hemp, rice, coconut, hazelnut milk. I prefer unflavored since the smell of vanilla can be too powerful sometimes.

  3. This is sunshine in a glass Caroline! The winter can definitely be tough on our skin – yesterday was -10C (14F) here in Toronto and I don’t think things are going to warm up for a while! I love your addition of lemon juice to your smoothie – I’m a big fan of having a glass of lemon water to start my day. Thanks for a well-timed reminder and yummy recipe to keep us all feeling healthy and bright this time of year!

    1. Same here Liz! My skin is so dry and flaky I needed to do something about it! I’ve lived in Toronto for 5 years so I know how much harsher the weather can be, especially near Front street when it’s windy – Freezing!
