I get instantly hungry when I look at this cantaloupe smoothie – it’s sweet, fruity, and so hydrating on a hot summer day! I’ll have it for breakfast or as an afternoon pick me up to get a boost of vitamin C. No extra sugar is added and only 3 ingredients are needed.

Lately I’ve taken to simplifying my smoothie recipes. Not only because it takes more effort to chop a variety of fruits (I rarely buy pre sliced fruits) but also because these fruity drinks can quickly become high in calories and sugar. So I have been focusing on making smoothies that require less than 5 ingredients and I have to say that they are just as delicious, if not more, than the complex ones.

By using less ingredients, the flavor of a particular fruit gets to stand out. Take this cantaloupe smoothie for example – it tastes like summer in a glass. The natural sweetness and floral aroma of this melon really shine and make it hard to stop drinking! It’s both extremely quenching and energizing.

  • Cantaloupe: Choose a ripe cantaloupe to make this smoothie. Since there is no extra sugar added, the fruit itself must be very sweet in order to make this drink delicious. To find a ripe cantaloupe, look for one that’s heavy (it means it’s juicy), and one where the skin bounces back up when pressed down (do this with the bottom side of the melon). If it’s hard and doesn’t give it means it’s not ripe. If you press the skin and it leaves an indentation, it’s too ripe.
  • Orange juice: I recommend using freshly squeezed orange juice or a brand of orange juice you enjoy drinking.
  • Non dairy milk alternatives: I like using unsweetened oat milk because it tastes the closest to milk. Or coconut milk is another good option as it adds a tropical flavor the smoothie.
  • Ice cubes: Ice cubes are needed to give the smoothie a chilled and slightly frozen texture.

Variations

  • Using another type of melon such as watermelon or honeydew melon also works well.
  • Adding berries such as strawberries and raspberries will add extra sweetness and some tanginess.

How To Make This Cantaloupe Smoothie

  1. Chop the cantaloupe.
  2. Add all the ingredients to a blender and blend until smooth. Enjoy!

Expert Tip

  • Chill the glasses in the fridge before using them. This helps to keep the smoothies extra cold for a little longer. Or serve them in insulated tumblers to keep them cold for much longer.
  • Give it an extra second to blend. Because cantaloupe can have a mealy texture, it’s important to blend this smoothie a bit longer than you normally would for other fruits.

Storage

This cantaloupe smoothie tastes best when served freshly made. If you would like to save some for later, transfer it to a storage container with a lid and refrigerate for up to 2 days. Give it a good shake before drinking as the liquid will most likely have separated.
