Avocado And Cheese Dumplings
Whenever I go to Japan I pick up a few cookbooks and recipe magazines to take home with me. What’s funny is that I don’t read Japanese very well. I can read hiragana, katakana and some kanji, but not enough to be able to read more than a few words at a time.
Luckily, I have Google Translate on my phone so I can snap a pic, click translate, and sort of understand each recipe. The translation can be pretty bad at times but I can get by between that and my intermediate level Japanese. The process is slightly tedious but so worth it since the food in Japan is so Oh-My-Gosh amazing!
One of the cookbooks I purchased a few years back has quick and creative recipes mixing Western and Japanese cuisines. It’s one of my favorite cookbooks and one I use on a regular basis to get ideas on what to make for the blog.
You know when food images make you drool so bad that you run to the store to grab the ingredients ASAP? That cookbook has that effect on me every single time.
These cheese and avocado dumplings are an adaptation of a recipe I found in that book. I had to share it with you because it’s so yummy and incredibly simple to make. You want to wow your guest at your next Super Bowl party or surprise your family with a a fun, kid friendly dish for dinner?
Make these, everyone will love them!
This recipe may just be the easiest dumpling recipe of all time.
I’m not particularly good at folding wonton wrappers so the thought of making these was a bit scary at first. It turned out to be a breeze!
The filling is made of mashed avocados mixed with mayo and shredded sharp cheddar cheese. That’s it. Slap these ingredients between two round dumpling wrappers, seal and lightly fry until golden brown.
Magic!
Serve with sriracha sauce – it pairs so nicely it will make you sing out loud.

Ingredients
- 24 dumpling wrappers
- 1 avocado (peeled and pitted)
- 2 tablespoons light mayonnaise or Kewpie Japanese mayonnaise
- pinch of salt
- shredded sharp cheddar cheese, mozzarella cheese or jack cheese (mozzarella cheese or pepper jack cheese)
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- sriracha sauce (optional)
Instructions
- Fill a small bowl with water and place it next to you.
- Put avocado in a bowl and mash with a fork. Add mayonnaise and salt and mix well.
- Place 12 dumpling wrappers on a flat surface and add 2 teaspoons of the avocado mixture in the center of each dumpling. Top with a little shredded cheese.
- Grab a dumpling that has filling and top with a dumpling sheet. Dip your index finger in water and wet the edges while gently pressing down to seal the dumpling. Repeat this step until all the dumplings are sealed.

I would love to try this but is there a substitute for mayonnaise? And can this be baked instead of frying? Thanks a bunch!
Hi Eunice, you can omit the mayonnaise since the avocado will keep the dumpling creamy and gooey. I’m not sure if you can bake these though, the crispy texture is what makes these so delicious 🙂
I have always had a dislike for warm avocado (I know it’s pretty weird), but this sounds so good and easy I may have to give it a try again.
