German Potatoes

Japanese style German potatoes is a very popular dish in Japan that can be found in most izakaya establishments. Japanese people love potatoes and have come up with some creative ways to introduce them into everyday meals. I’m using Yukon gold’s for this recipe because they’re my absolute favorite.

I like their sweetness and creaminess and the fact that this potato can stand on its own, without extra flavoring. The bacon adds saltiness while the combination of butter and soy makes it classically Japanese, as it is often used in many of their dishes. Serve these German style potatoes with a simple chicken ponzu or a terrific chicken adobo.

Description

This is Japanese adaptation of the classic German potato dish.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 potatoes, such as russet or Yukon gold
  • 1 small onion, sliced into half moons
  • 3 stalks scallions, roughly chopped
  • 4 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 2 slices bacon, chopped bite size
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon soy sauce
  • freshly ground black pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Peel and cut the potatoes into medium size sticks (about the size of your finger). Add 3 tablespoons of oil to a large skillet and turn the heat on to medium high.
  2. When the oil is hot, add the potatoes and fry on each side for about 3-4 minutes, until they are golden brown. Take the potatoes out and rest them on paper towels to remove excess oil.
  3. Cook on each side for about 3-4 minutes, until golden brown.
  4. In another medium size pan over medium heat, add 1 tablespoon oil. Add the onions and scallions, and cook for 3 minutes. Add the bacon and cook for 3 minutes.
  5. Add the potatoes and butter and cook for 1 minute. Turn off the heat and plate.
  6. Pour the soy sauce over the potatoes, season with freshly ground black pepper and serve.

Notes

Save these potatoes in a storage container and refrigerate for up to 3 days.
