top ramen

I couldn’t resist. I had to do it.

I love Halloween and I love Top Ramen noodles so it seemed befitting that these two should meet in a colorful bowl of savory and brothy goodness.

I thought it would be fun to create something quick and easy that both kids and adults could enjoy eating. Who doesn’t like Top Ramen style noodles? No one I know that’s for sure!

You can obviously use other types of noodles for your Halloween creation.

The reason why I picked Top Ramen for this recipe is because they are easy to find and everyone can afford them.

Plus I think most kids like Top Ramen better than soba or udon noodles because they are fried and have that junk food aspect to them. Come to think of it, that’s probably why many adults also love Top Ramen, especially late at night after having a few drinks!

This is a pretty hearty dish, filling because of the sausage fingers, the egg white ghosts and yolk ‘dirt’. I mixed the egg yolks with some gochujang to make it look like dirt and add heat to the broth. There is also shiitake mushrooms that have been shaped like spiders, some carrots cut like pumpkins and sliced scallions to mimic grass. I then used nori to make the eyes for the ghosts and spiders and voila! A bowl of Halloween Top Ramen that’s fun and delicious to eat!

If you cannot find the Top Ramen brand, you can use Maruchan or Sapporo Ichiban as they are pretty much the same thing. If you want to go a step up you can look for Umaka-chan – a favorite of mine since the noodles are thinner and the broth is more savory than salty.

Description

Delicious and colorful ramen noodles to celebrate Halloween.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 shiitake mushrooms
  • 1 small carrot
  • 2 stalks scallions (cut 1/3 lengthwise and finely chopped)
  • 2 instant beef or chicken ramen
  • 2 boiled eggs
  • 1 teaspoon gochujang (Korean chili paste)
  • 1 cooked medium sausage
  • 1 sheet of nori

Instructions

  1. Slice the eggs in half, scoop out the yolk and put them in a bowl.
  2. Using a pairing knife, carefully cut out little ghosts from the cooked egg whites.
  3. Add gochujang to the egg yolk and using a fork, mix with the yolk until you get a gritty texture.
  4. Cut the sausage in half lengthwise and widthwise. This will make four pieces. Using a pairing knife, create a nail by cutting off a thin layer at the end of each sausage piece. Cut a couple of lines below to make knuckles.
  5. Thinly slice 6 pieces of carrots and use the pairing knife again to create pumpkin shapes.
  6. Use scissors to create legs for the shiitake mushrooms.
  7. Use the sheet of nori to make eyes for the ghost and spider and use tweezers to place them.
  8. Cook the noodles following the directions on the package.
  9. Pour the soup and noodles in a bowl and take out 1/2 cup of soup.
  10. You can now create your Halloween ramen by placing the ingredients on top. Serve immediately.

Notes

Make the garnishes ahead of time so you can surprise your kids when they get back from school!

Questions and Reviews

  1. I just bought “zombie ramen” which has green noodles so I was searching for some ideas about what else to put in it. This was very helpful. 😀 I don’t have nori so perhaps cutting a portion of a black olive will do? I doubt it will stick onto the egg but it’s worth a try. 😉 I love the carrots.

    1. Black olives will totally work! I love the green noodles idea, will be trying it this coming Halloween!

  2. That’s hilarious – those sausage fingers are slightly disturbing but I bet they’re tasty! 🙂 Great one for the kids!

  3. I am seeing lots of sweet Halloween inspired recipes lately but this is the first savoury Halloween recipe I have seen.. and I am totally loving it! Definitely inspired to recreate the recipe, thanks for sharing it & Pinned!
