Cantaloupe Smoothie
I get instantly hungry when I look at this cantaloupe smoothie. It’s fruity and the color of a Creamsicle, which happens to be one of my favorite ice treats! I also love that this smoothie gives my skin a hydrating glow as soon as I have it for a few days in a row. I can almost see my fine lines disappearing!
Lately I’ve taken to simplifying my smoothie recipes. I have to admit to being a little lazy in the morning – maybe because it’s summer and my body wants to sleep in or maybe my brain is struggling to stay on track with work related stuff. I might be suffering from a mild burn out and my way of rebelling is to do as little as I can in the kitchen, aka my office. I spend so much time in there, day in, day out, that sometimes I need a break from it. Thinking about what recipes to create, shoot and edit week after week can be exhausting. When I’m not thinking about the blog, I’m thinking about what to have for lunch or dinner, or what to get at the grocery store. It’s impossible to completely get away from food.
But enough about my rant, I wouldn’t want you to think I’m complaining. Believe me when I say I feel extremely lucky to be able to call food blogging my career! Yes it’s a lot of work but it’s worth every bead of sweat. I get to work from home with my husband and my kitty and that’s priceless! Plus, I get to eat for a living and share amazing recipes with you like this summery cantaloupe smoothie. Life is good and I have you, my loyal readers, to thank for my good fortune 🙂
I am skipping all dairy products for this cantaloupe smoothie recipe and there’s a good reason for it. About a month ago I realized I was lactose intolerant after reading about the symptoms associated with this condition. My stomach often gurgled loudly after eating dairy plus I suffered from gas and stomach pain. I also suffered from chronic sinus headaches which were so painful at times, my head felt like it weighed 100 pounds. I became truly concerned about my health because sinus headaches are not joke – they are debilitating to the point where you just want to lie down and sleep all day. It’s a sad state of affairs when writing a post becomes such a painful experience, you wonder how you can go on blogging.Â
Five weeks ago is when I decided to stop eating dairy which was a real bummer because I’m half French Canadian -> half of my body is made of cheese curds. I gave myself two weeks to go without dairy to see if I would notice any changes. Lo and behold, only three days into my experiment and I was already feeling much better. All of a sudden I could breathe better and the tightness I constantly felt between my eyes and above my eyebrows was gone. I felt clear headed which, sadly enough, was a sensation I hadn’t felt for decades. Since then I have quit using my allergy nasal spray and haven’t popped a single Advil!
Switching from dairy to non dairy products like almond yogurt and milk took some getting used to but for me, it was worth the change. I never want to feel that heaviness right above my eyes again! If this means I only get to eat cheese a couple of times a year as opposed to weekly, I’m okay with it. Just like with meat, I’ll treat a plate of cheese as a luxury and enjoy it that much more 🙂
You can use any type of milk for this cantaloupe smoothie recipe since the main flavor is coming from the cantaloupe itself. This isn’t a toned down version of a cantaloupe smoothie – it’s 100%, in your face, cantaloupeness! I’ve added a little orange juice to brighten it up and give a boost of vitamin C, an important component for healthy and supple skin. I always make my smoothies multi-purposed – they have to taste delicious, feel satisfying and have some beauty related benefits.
Make sure to blend this smoothie for more than a couple of seconds since the mealy texture of cantaloupe can be unpleasant. You can make this cantaloupe smoothie ahead of time and store it in the fridge for up to two days. It’s a sweet treat you can have for breakfast or as a dessert!
