Gluten Free Curried Avocado Flatbreads

I have a weakness for Indian flatbreads.
Whenever I’m having dinner at an Indian restaurant, I always order two plates of flatbreads, different flavors, and dipping sauces on the side.
But because good Indian food isn’t cheap in Manhattan, I have come up with my own version of Indian flatbread at home. It’s easy, healthy and takes less than 5 minutes to put together. And it’s also gluten free so anyone with a wheat allergy can enjoy these babies! For this recipe I’m using Mission® Gluten Free Soft Taco Tortillas, which are certified gluten free, because they are light and soft, and turn beautifully crispy once they puff up.
Cooking gluten-free meals is something I have become used to doing after finding out that some of my closest friends suffer from wheat allergies. Since I love throwing dinner parties, I’ve had to familiarize myself with gluten free products. It’s good to know which ones make good substitutes since I refuse to make sacrifices in the flavor department!
But finding good gluten free bread has always been a problem. Most of them are dry and crumble at the mere touch.
So you can imagine how happy I was when I found that Mission Gluten Free Soft Taco Tortillas were just the opposite. They are soft and moist and have just the right amount of sweetness. They are also easy to find at the grocery store in the tortilla section or gluten free section (available nationwide – click here to find a store near you.)
Good gluten free bread does exist after all!
I like to serve these curried avocado flatbreads as an appetizer, snack or as part of a meal since they pair well with just about anything.
What makes these gluten free flatbreads so irresistible is the combination of curry spices, aromatic herbs (fresh oregano and dill), red pepper flakes, nutty sesame seeds and creamy avocado. The flavors are very distinct but don’t overpower the natural sweetness of the tortillas. Plus, the mix between creamy avocado and crispy flatbread is hard to resist!
I could eat these every day!
This is a no fail recipe too – anyone can make these flatbreads.
All you need is a pan, some olive oil, Mission Gluten Free Soft Taco Tortillas, a few spices, sesame seeds and herbs.
Place the pan on a burner and turn the heat to medium. Brush both sides of a tortilla with olive oil and when the pan is hot, place the tortilla in it for a couple of minutes. You will see it puff up and turn golden brown, it’s actually quite pretty! Flip it over, wait another 2 minutes and transfer the tortilla to a plate. Sprinkle some of the curry powder mixture over the tortilla and top with some fresh avocado slices.
Now because we are serving these flatbreads with avocado on top, it’s best to serve them right away before the avocado slices change color. If you would like to make these ahead of time you can pan fry and season the flatbreads, but save the avocado slices for just before serving.

You can swap oregano for cilantro, dill for parsley, even curry powder for za’atar spices. And if you are into cheese, I highly recommend breaking up a few pieces of feta or grating some fresh parmesan on top.

Gluten-Free Curried Avocado Flatbreads

- 6 Mission® Gluten Free Soft Taco Tortillas
- 3 tablespoons olive oil
- 2 teaspoons curry powder
- 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1 teaspoon sesame seeds
- 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes
- 1/2 tablespoon fresh oregano (finely chopped)
- 1 tablespoon fresh dill (finely chopped)
- 1 avocado (peeled, pitted and sliced)
- In a small bowl, mix in curry powder, kosher salt, sesame seeds, red pepper flakes, oregano and dill.
- Place a medium size pan on a burner and turn the heat to medium.
- Grab one tortilla and brush both sides with olive oil.
- When the pan is hot, add tortilla and fry on one side for 2-3 minutes. The tortilla should puff up. Check after two minutes to make sure the bottom side isn’t burning, golden brown is what you are looking for.
- Flip the tortilla over and leave for 2 minutes. Transfer to a plate and sprinkle a little curry powder mixture over it. Top with avocado slices, set aside until the other tortillas are done or serve immediately.
- Repeat the same for the remaining 5 tortillas. Serve immediately.
